Rockford Reads
Rockford Reads is a volunteer reading program initiated by the Rockford Rotary Club 25 years ago. The program partners Rockford Rotary with Rockford Public Schools and Rockford Public Libraries. The program is designed to enhance the literacy development of second and third-grade students in the Rockford Public Schools. Community volunteers and students work one-on-one reading for one hour each week. Since inception, well over 7,000 students have benefited from the program.
The volunteer process for Rockford Reads is:
- Complete the Volunteer Application form which can be found on the RPS 205 website at RPS205.com. Find the Community tab, then Volunteers, then Supervised Volunteers. The on-line application can be found there.
- You will be notified by RPS when you have been cleared. Once you are notified, contact Kathy Kwiat-Hess, the Rockford Reads Chair for Rockford Rotary, at kathykwiathess@gmail.com.
- Kathy will get you set up with a school assignment and a contact at that school.
- The volunteer and the teacher will select a reading time that works best.
- Volunteers and students will read together as scheduled throughout the rest of the school year.
