January 5th Program
Pennycress - Helping Solve Soil Health and Water Quality Problems

Dr. Win Phippen is a tenured full professor in the School of Agriculture. He received his MS degree from Cornell University in plant breeding and a PhD from Purdue University in the NewCrops breeding program. His research is focused on agronomic and breeding improvement of new and alternative crops. In 2010, he established a field pennycress (Thlaspi arvense L.) breeding program focused on germplasm collection, field evaluation and controlled crosses to domesticate pennycress for commercial production.
As the result of the research of Dr. Phippin and his higher education team, the planting and harvest of field Pennycress has reached practical implementation.  Dr. Phippin is an advisor for a newly formed company called CoverCress.  Now, the acreage of implementation is growing.  CoverCress has partnerships with Chevron, Bunge and Bayer to help manage the exponential growth that is anticipated.  Dr. Phippin will discuss his research, talk about where we are and use his “crystal ball” to predict the future of this world-changing issue.

CoverCress seed should be planted as soon as possible post-harvest of the preceding corn or soybean crop to take advantage of the heat, light, and moisture to ensure good stand establishment. The seed is very tiny and has specific requirements for germination.

The harvest window opens when 95% of the pods have turned to a bright tan color, with the rest being some shade of yellow, typically between May 20–and May 30.

Dr. Phippin will be telling us about a cash cover crop called Pennycress which he has been developing through the Western Illinois University Agricultural Research Department.  THis is a game changer for the improvement of our environment through improved soil health and water quality.   Plus, it will be putting $$ into farmer's pockets which will help the economy.
This will be an interesting and informative program.  It will also be an opportunity to invite a guest to Memorial Hall or have them join us via zoom.  President Eric will introduce our presenter and act as Rotary host.

Vocational Talk - Eric Moe

Eric with his wife Christy, son and daughter-in-law Philip
and Michelle and grandsons, Callen and Beckett.

Vocational talks are important to our Club.  These talks give our members a chance to get to know more about each other. The subject of the talks are the choice of the member giving the program.  The talk can be about a specific project or career subject.  It can be a comprehensive look at what made that person who they are today, or an interest or passion the member has.  The sky is the limit.
Eric will talk about his life and his career.  Eri lives outside Winnebago with his wife Christy.  They have been married for 35 years.  He is and has been a Civil Engineer for IMEG Corporation for 33 years.  He as born in England and was raised as the son of a Lutheran Pastor and Registered Nurse.  He enjoys many outdoor activities and looks forward to telling the Club more about his work, interests and family.
This will be the first of our 2nd Thursday vocational/service project meetings.
We would encourage our members to invite a guest to join us in person at Memorial Hall or via zoom.  Obviously, President Eric will introduce the presenter and act as Rotary host.

Wesley Willows - New Member
New Member - "Chip" Chapdelaine

At the Wesley Willows Satellite Club meeting on 12/27/22, Dick Leighton welcomed a new member, Roland "Chip" Chapdelaine.  If the name sounds familiar, it is because Chip served as the third President of Rock Valley College from 1997 to 2004.  Under his leadership, a facilities master plan was developed to guide the future growth of the campus. Approved by the Board of Trustees in 1999, the plan looked 25 years into the future. Among the projects completed were impressive enhancements to the Bengt Sjostrom Theatre, a new Support Services Building, and remodeling of the Student Center. The projects enhanced a campus already recognized as one of the most beautiful in the state.
     Welcome to Rockford Rotary, Chip.
