Celebrating high school students at last year's High School Recognition Event.
High School Recognition
CELEBRATE HIGH SCHOOLERS!
A favorite event is coming up, our annual High School Recognition/Scholarship program on April 25. We will honor two seniors each from area high schools who are service leaders at their schools, plus we will announce two winners of the $2,000 Burdette Anderson Scholarship Awards.
For this special catered lunch, the price is $20 per person. Please pay Rotary Treasurer Monica Glenny by check, by PayPal @CharitableRkfdRotary or by cash. Many Rotarians generously donate another $20 to pay for students, principals and parents, as they are our guests.
Thank you for your kindness! The lunch is catered by the University Club of Rockford.
At our April 18th meeting, President Pete inducted Laura Eakman as the newest member of Rockford. Laura was sponsored by Elise Cadigan. We would encourage all of our members to meet Laura and welcome her to ROckford Rotary.
Laura Eakman currently serves as Executive Director of The Music Academy in Rockford, a non-profit community music school offering traditional and Suzuki instruction for all ages. Prior to her work in Rockford, she founded Suzuki Strings of Manhattan where she ran a Suzuki Program, Summer Chamber Music Camp and conducted the local youth Orchestra. Additional past experience includes serving as Chair of the Strings Division for the Community School for the Performing Arts at Kansas State University and teaching with El Sistema Colorado which serves primarily disadvantaged students in the Denver Area.
Laura received her Doctorate of Musical Arts degree from the University of Colorado, Boulder where she served as Erika Eckert’s teaching assistant and studied chamber music with members of the Takacs Quartet. Her doctoral thesis, Teaching the Violin with Purpose: strategies designed to foster musical, cognitive, and social development in low-income students, has been a resource for El Sistema sites, and has been adapted to suit the Suzuki philosophy in articles and pedagogy workshops.
An avid freelance and chamber musician, Laura has performed throughout the United States and internationally. As a chamber musician, Dr. Eakman has collaborated with the assistant concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic, Michelle Kim, as well as renowned soloist, Elizabeth Pitcairn. She has worked with the Bill T. Jones and Arnie Zane Dance Company, performed with new music ensembles in Colorado, and was a founding member of the Avant Duo, Kylian Quartet, and Camus Quartet which toured the Netherlands in 2009.
Laura's pedagogy training has included Suzuki registration with Ann Montzka-Smelser as well as classes and workshops with Mimi Zweig of Indiana University; she enjoys enrichment courses and is always learning as a teacher and pedagogue.
Laura's sponsor, Elise Cadigan, presents her with her Rotary lapel pin.

In order to become a member of the Paul Harris Society is very simple. You just have to agree to contribute $1,000 each year to the Rotary International Foundation. At our April 18th meeting, Bob Canfield, RI Foundation chair, became a member of the Paul Harris Society. Talk about leading by example!! He was presented his certificate and pin by PDG and District 6420 Foundation Chair Laura Kann.
It has also come to our attention that Rockford Rotary is only half-way to our goal of $15,000 for the Rotary International Foundation. If you have any questions about how to contribute, contact Bob at canfilaw@sbcglobal.net .
