Rockford Aerospace: A Place to Grow

Jeff began flying at 8-years old sitting on his father's lap.  He began flying lessons four years later and at 19, he became a flight instructor while going to college.  Kaney's love flying took him into the U.S. Air Force for a decade and then into commercial flying with an international airline. So it is not surprising that when Kaney began to look for another challenge it was focused around aviation.

Starting with an empty hangar with no other employees, Jeff founded Kaney Aerospace, a Rockford-based company that specializes in engineering, manufacturing, assembly and testing of aerospace systems and components.  Today, Kaney Aerospace is housed in a 19,000-saure-foot space with 65 employees.  The company has satellite offices in Seattle; Dayton, Ohio; and England, with customers that  include Boeing, Embraer, GE Aviation, UTC Aerospace and Woodward, just to name a few.  Kaney Aerospace also takes advantage of the engineering and manufacturing expertise found in the surrounding communities.

As a member of the RAEDC, Jeff was instrumental in initiating the Rockford Area Aerospace Network (RAAN) a consortium of companies implementing a strategic plan to increase the competitiveness of the Rockford Region for aeropspace expansion and attraction.

Water: Using Date-Driven Decision Making Tools to Meet the Future Needs

Parts of the Rockford's water system is nearing over century in age; and provides 18 million gallons of clean water daily to customers. Improving the water infrastructure while insuring a safe and adequate supply is not without challenge.  For years, Fehr Graham and the City of Rockford Water Division had a proven public-private partnership on the repair of the water infrastructure.  But now the focus is on developing a forward-thinking and fiscally responsible water infrastructure investment program for the future. In addition, this partnership is tasked with finding ways to improve infrastructure using cost-saving measures, such as data-driven decisions to prioritize projects and creative designs to minimize impact on residents.

Kyle Saunders, the watersuperintendent for the City of Rockford, and Seth Gronewold, a professional engineer with Fehr Graham, will help us understand the infrastructure needed to insure clean water and the benefits of the this partnership for Rockford residents.

Circle of Change Veterans' Dog Program

The goal of the Circle Of Change Veterans' Dog Program is to help military veterans work through their PTSD and other psychological issues by focusing on training and working with dogs who also have issues.  The vets work with a professional trainer.  The dogs are customers of the trainer and many are rescues, dealing with issues of aggression or withdrawal.  There is no charge for the veterans to participate in the program.  The program partners with the Rockford VA Clinic and the Madison VA Hospital.

Stephen has been in nonprofit leadership roles in Rockford for over 20 years. The majority of that time he was President & CEO of Careers, Etc. and just prior to the Circle of Change was with Rock River Training/Workforce Connection. He has been recognized by the Department of Illinois of both the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars for outstanding service to U.S. military veterans.
