Three of the four co-chairs (Bill Gorski, Bobbie Holzwarth, Rudy Valdez) will be presenting at the Jan 4 Rotary event.  The co-chairs of the Our Decisions; Our Solutions Committee will present information on Home Rule. The presentation will range from defining Home Rule to examples of its pros/cons. It has been nearly 35 years since the Rockford voters have had the opportunity to decide whether or not they want to shift decision-making from the state to the local level. It is important to make an informed decision on the March 20, 2018 referendum.

Kevin Thomas coordinates the Mt. Zion After School Program, a neighborhood based program housed in the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, just 2 blocks north of the Rotary Labyrinth on N. Avon St. The After School Program works with student from K-8 on math and reading skills, while providing meals, recreation and, when needed, transportation.  Mt. Zion was central in launching the Zion West Neighborhood Association, which is part of the West Gateway Coalition.

In April of 2017, Rockford Rotary became aware of the After School Program through the West Gateway Coalition, working with Kevin and other Mt. Zion staff, the club developed a district grant application, to supply three classrooms with furniture.  The club committed up to $4,000 and requested the maximum $2,000 from the district.  This grant was approved and the club proved the program with not only three classrooms with furniture, but was also able to provide three flat screen computer monitors.

Kevin will provide the club with information about the program and Zion West Neighborhood Association activities.

As Employment Services Manager for RAMP, Jeremy oversees the job readiness, job development and case management, including peer support and mentoring for individuals with disabilities getting into or returning to the workforce.  One of the newest programs developed overseen by Jeremy is PROJECT SEARCH a school-to-work transition program for students with disabilities housed entirely at Mercyhealth Hospital-Rockton Avenue.  PROJECT SEARCH was among 21 community collaboration programs receiving the Confluence Award at the Rockford Chamber of Commerce's 2107 Confluence Honors event.

PROJECT SEARCH partners include RAMP CIL, Mercyhealth, Belvidere School District and the Illinois Department of Vocational Recreation. Students selected for the program worked in three internships over the course of one year, receiving classroom instruction and hands-on training, including goal setting and career exploration. Each student was supported by a team that included their family, an instructor, a department mentor, rehabilitation counselor and skills trainers to create an employment goal and to support their transition from school to work.

Come learn about this project and how it is changing lives in our community.

Jeff began flying at 8-years old sitting on his father's lap.  He began flying lessons four years later and at 19, he became a flight instructor while going to college.  Kaney's love flying took him into the U.S. Air Force for a decade and then into commercial flying with an international airline. So it is not surprising that when Kaney began to look for another challenge it was focused around aviation.

Starting with an empty hangar with no other employees, Jeff founded Kaney Aerospace, a Rockford-based company that specializes in engineering, manufacturing, assembly and testing of aerospace systems and components.  Today, Kaney Aerospace is housed in a 19,000-saure-foot space with 65 employees.  The company has satellite offices in Seattle; Dayton, Ohio; and England, with customers that  include Boeing, Embraer, GE Aviation, UTC Aerospace and Woodward, just to name a few.  Kaney Aerospace also takes advantage of the engineering and manufacturing expertise found in the surrounding communities.

As a member of the RAEDC, Jeff was instrumental in initiating the Rockford Area Aerospace Network (RAAN) a consortium of companies implementing a strategic plan to increase the competitiveness of the Rockford Region for aeropspace expansion and attraction.
